Free security patrol log template
A printable patrol log for security officers that records each round, every checkpoint and what was found. Print it, or save it as a PDF.
What should a security patrol log include?
A security patrol log should record the site, officer and shift, the route or area, the start and end time of each round, every checkpoint visited with the time, what the officer found at each one, any action taken and incident report numbers, and the officer's initials, with a supervisor's review at the end of the shift.
Section by section
Shift details
Site, date, officer, licence number, shift times, the route and how often it must be patrolled.
Rounds
The start and end time of each round, so gaps between patrols are obvious.
Checkpoints
Each checkpoint or location visited, with the time and the officer's initials.
Conditions found
Doors, gates, windows, lights, alarms, fire exits and hazards: what was found, not just "all OK".
Action taken
What the officer did about anything found, and the incident report number if one was written.
Review
The officer's signature and the supervisor's review.

Patrol logs that prove the work
- Fill in each checkpoint when you reach it, not at the end of the round.
- Vary patrol times within the required frequency so the pattern is hard to predict.
- Write what you found ("fire exit 3 blocked by pallets, moved, reported to client"), not just a tick.
- If a round is missed or cut short, write down why.
- Cross-reference incident report numbers instead of retelling the incident.
Patrols that log themselves
In ForceVera, officers scan QR checkpoints with the guard app, each scan is time-stamped and located, and missed or late tours alert supervisors straight away. See guard tour system in ForceVera.
Questions, answered
What is a patrol log?
A patrol log is the officer's record of each patrol round: when it started and finished, which checkpoints were visited and what was found. It is the paper version of proof of patrol.
How often should security patrols be done?
As often as the post orders and the client contract require, often hourly or every two hours at night. Higher-risk sites need more frequent, less predictable rounds.
Can a paper patrol log be trusted?
It relies on the officer's honesty, which is why many companies use a guard tour system: checkpoints are scanned, and each scan records the time and location automatically.
How does ForceVera record patrols?
Officers scan QR checkpoints with the guard app. Each scan is time-stamped and located, missed or late tours raise alerts, and patrol activity goes into the client's daily report.
